Alvarez

Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has emerged as one of the most sought-after players ahead of the summer transfer window, with Barcelona continuing to lead the race for his signature despite interest from fierce rivals Real Madrid.

According to expert Matteo Moretto, the Argentina international has made Barcelona his preferred destination should he leave the Riyadh Air Metropolitano this summer.

The 26-year-old has reportedly informed Atletico of his desire to seek a new challenge and has declined the club’s latest contract renewal proposal.

Strong 2025–26 Season at Atletico Madrid

Alvarez enjoyed an outstanding 2025-26 campaign and established himself as one of Diego Simeone’s most influential attacking players. Across 49 appearances in all competitions, he scored 20 goals and provided nine assists while also playing a crucial role in Atletico’s deep runs in both domestic and European competitions.

His performances in the UEFA Champions League were particularly impressive. Alvarez scored 10 goals and registered five assists in 15 appearances as Atletico reached the semi-finals before suffering elimination.

In La Liga, he contributed eight goals and four assists in 29 appearances, while he added another two goals and one assist in the Copa del Rey as Atletico advanced to the final.

Impressive Overall Record Since Joining Atletico

Since arriving from Manchester City in 2024, the Argentine forward has amassed 49 goals and 17 assists in 106 appearances for Los Colchoneros, underlining his importance to the club.

His consistent output has made him one of Atletico’s most reliable attacking threats across all competitions.

Barcelona’s €100 Million Bid Rejected

Barcelona have already made their move for the former Manchester City star. The Catalan giants submitted an offer worth €100 million, but Atletico immediately rejected the proposal.

Club officials remain reluctant to lose one of their most valuable assets and are understood to value Álvarez significantly higher.

Atletico’s Valuation and Negotiation Stance

Moretto reports that Atletico could reconsider their stance if an offer between €120 million and €125 million arrives, a figure that would surpass the €120 million Barcelona paid to sign Antoine Griezmann from Atletico in 2019.

However, Alvarez’s preference for Barcelona has complicated any potential approach from the Santiago Bernabeu hierarchy.

Financial Challenges for Barcelona

The major obstacle remains Barcelona’s financial position. While the Blaugrana view Alvarez as a marquee addition capable of leading their attack for years to come, they are currently unwilling to increase their €100 million proposal to match Atletico’s valuation.

As things stand, the player’s desire to leave has placed pressure on Atletico, but the Madrid club remains determined to maintain a strong negotiating position.
