Newport County have appointed Hayden Mullins as their new permanent manager, ending Christian Fuchs’ turbulent seven-month spell in charge. The move fills a vacancy that opened in June, when Fuchs stepped down after steering the club to League Two safety on the final day.
Mullins arrives from Fulham, where he spent three years leading the Under-21 side. During that spell, he collected the Premier League Cup and later picked up the inaugural PL2 Head Coach of the Season award. Consequently, his reputation as a development-focused coach preceded the appointment. However, senior management now brings a fresh test.
A Familiar Face Returns to English Football
Mullins is no stranger to first-team pressure. He previously took interim charge of Watford on two separate occasions, following the departures of Quique Sánchez Flores and Nigel Pearson. Later, he joined Colchester United as an assistant before being promoted to permanent manager in 2021. That spell ended within a year, though it gave him valuable experience of steadying a club mid-season.
His playing career, meanwhile, spanned more than 500 senior appearances. Representing Crystal Palace, West Ham United, and Portsmouth, he also earned England Under-21 recognition. Therefore, Newport’s ownership under Huw Jenkins is banking on that blend of experience and modern coaching to end a pattern of instability; Mullins becomes the fourth permanent boss appointed since the 2024 takeover.
Newport Face an Immediate Test
Time is short before competitive action begins. Mullins takes his first session with immediate effect, and his first match arrives quickly: a pre-season friendly away to Yeovil this weekend. A glamour clash follows, as Italian side Roma visit Rodney Parade on 4 August.
After that, the serious business starts. Newport open their Carabao Cup campaign against AFC Wimbledon on 8 August, before hosting Rochdale in their League Two opener a week later. Given the club’s recent managerial churn, fans will hope Mullins can finally provide continuity.
