A Six-Month Saga Finally Ends
The transfer that refused to die is finally done. Alessio Romagnoli has agreed to join Al Sadd from Lazio on a permanent deal worth three million euros, bringing a six-month saga to its long-awaited conclusion. Documents are ready. The verbal agreement between all parties is in place. Formal steps remain, but the deal is sealed.
This move almost happened in January. Al Sadd were on the cusp of signing the 31-year-old in the winter window, but Lazio president Claudio Lotito reportedly asked Romagnoli to give up three months of his salary. The defender refused on principle, already irritated by broken promises from the club hierarchy. The deal collapsed. Romagnoli was brought back into the squad to finish the season, with Lazio promising him the freedom to leave in the summer.
That promise has now been honoured. Al Sadd assured Romagnoli in January that they would return for him in the summer. They kept their word. Roberto Mancini, the former Italy national team coach now managing Al Sadd, played a central role in convincing the defender to make the move to Doha. His presence in Qatar gave Romagnoli the sporting confidence to commit.
The deal is expected to be structured as a two-year contract with an option for a third. Personal terms align with a reported package of six million euros per season, making it the most lucrative contract of Romagnoli’s career.
Farewell to a Club He Always Loved
The emotional dimension of this departure should not be understated. Despite starting his career at Roma, Romagnoli is a lifelong Lazio supporter who fulfilled his dream to play for the Biancocelesti when he joined on a free transfer from Milan in the summer of 2022. Four years. Four seasons wearing the shirt he grew up idolising. That counts for something.
Romagnoli was arguably Lazio’s best player in 2025/26, an undisputed starter throughout his time at the club. His relationship with Lotito, however, had deteriorated significantly. The January saga exposed a trust gap that never fully healed. No contract renewal offer ever arrived. The writing was on the wall long before the deal formally collapsed.
Lazio now receive three million euros for a defender who cost them nothing in 2022 and delivered consistent quality across four Serie A seasons. Al Sadd gain a technically accomplished centre-back with Serie A pedigree, Champions League experience from his AC Milan days, and the leadership qualities of a former captain.
Mancini’s own future at Al Sadd remains uncertain following reports linking him with the vacant Italy national team role. Should the Italian coach depart Doha this summer, Romagnoli would be left navigating a new country without the manager who recruited him. That adds a layer of risk to what is otherwise a well-structured exit.
