Tottenham Hotspur have announced the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson. The experienced left-back will join the club on 1 July after his contract with Liverpool expires.

The 32-year-old joins Tottenham after a successful nine-year tenure at Liverpool, where he became one of the Premier League’s top full-backs and contributed to the club’s major successes.

Robertson’s Liverpool Career and Trophy Success

Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017, making 378 appearances, scoring 14 goals, and providing 69 assists.

At Anfield, he won two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FA Community Shield. He also served as Liverpool’s vice-captain in his final season.

Battle for Tottenham’s Left-Back Position

Robertson’s arrival presents new manager Roberto De Zerbi with a key decision at left-back, as he is expected to compete with Destiny Udogie for a starting position.

Udogie endured a difficult 2025-26 campaign, making 28 appearances across the Premier League and Champions League and recording one assist.

Robertson made 34 appearances for Liverpool in the same competitions, contributing two goals and one assist in over 1,800 minutes of play.

Robertson’s Experience Compared to Udogie

The difference in experience between Robertson and Udogie is considerable.

Robertson has accumulated 332 Premier League appearances during his career, scoring 12 goals and providing 60 assists while helping his teams keep 95 clean sheets. His attacking output remains among the best ever produced by a defender in England’s top flight, with his 56 league assists for Liverpool representing a club record for a defender.

In comparison, Udogie has made 73 Premier League appearances, scoring two goals and providing five assists since joining the league.

Scotland Captain’s International Impact

Robertson’s impact extends beyond club football. Since becoming Scotland captain in 2018, he has led the national team through one of its most successful modern eras.

He has earned 92 international caps, making him Scotland’s highest-capped captain. He has led the team at multiple European Championships and guided Scotland to this summer’s FIFA World Cup, marking the nation’s return to football’s biggest stage.

Robertson’s Individual Achievements

His individual achievements include two selections in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year, underlining the consistency that made him one of the standout full-backs of his generation.

Tottenham Add Leadership and Winning Mentality

For Tottenham, Robertson’s arrival brings leadership, experience, and a winning mentality to a squad aiming to challenge at the top end of the Premier League under De Zerbi.

Whether Robertson secures the starting role or shares duties with Udogie, the Spurs have added one of the most decorated defenders in recent Premier League history.
