Son Heung-min became only the second player in South Korea’s history to appear at four FIFA World Cups as the Taeguk Warriors opened their 2026 campaign with a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic.
The 33-year-old captain was named in the starting line-up and played 69 minutes before being substituted as South Korea came from behind to secure all three points in their opening Group J fixture.
Son joins exclusive four-time World Cup club
The appearance saw Son join current South Korean head coach Hong Myung-bo as the only Korean footballers to feature at four separate World Cup tournaments, having previously represented his country at the 2014, 2018, and 2022 editions.
It was another landmark moment in a remarkable international career that has already established Son as one of the greatest players in South Korean football history.
Son’s performance against the Czech Republic
Leading the line for his country, Son was heavily involved in the contest against the Czech Republic.
He registered four shots during his 69 minutes on the pitch, testing the goalkeeper once while three efforts failed to find the target.
The forward also showcased his technical quality and composure in possession, completing all 17 of his attempted passes to finish with a perfect 100 per cent passing accuracy.
He created one goal-scoring opportunity for a teammate and won two fouls before making way in the second half.
Son’s World Cup record and potential milestone
The historic appearance was Son’s 11th match at the World Cup across four tournaments.
During that span, he has scored three goals and provided one assist.
Another goal in the United States, Canada, and Mexico would see him become South Korea’s outright leading scorer in World Cup history.
Son’s impact at club level
While no longer playing in Europe, Son continues to be a key figure for both club and country.
Since joining Los Angeles, he has evolved into a creative playmaker and remains one of Major League Soccer’s most influential attacking players.
Son’s 2026 MLS season form
In the 2026 MLS season, Son has made 13 appearances and accumulated 1,050 minutes.
Although he is still searching for his first league goal, he has contributed eight assists and created 23 chances, leading LAFC in assists.
His impact has been even more pronounced in the Concacaf Champions Cup, where he has recorded two goals and six assists in eight appearances.
Son’s international legacy
Son’s international record is equally impressive.
The South Korea captain now has 145 caps and 56 goals for his country, leaving him just two strikes short of equalling Cha Bum-kun’s all-time national scoring record.
