Sandro Tonali

Manchester United have reportedly cooled their interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with the club’s recruitment focus now moving towards other areas of the squad.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Italian international had previously been considered as a potential midfield addition at Old Trafford, but a move now appears increasingly unlikely as United reassess their priorities ahead of the new season.

Tonali’s price tag complicates potential move

Newcastle are understood to value Tonali at more than £100 million, a figure that has significantly complicated any possibility of negotiations.

The Magpies are also under little financial pressure to sell after generating substantial income through player departures, including the reported £69 million sale of Anthony Gordon.

United steps away from Elliot Anderson pursuit

United have similarly stepped away from their interest in Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, another player who had attracted attention from the club’s recruitment department.

Anderson’s valuation has risen dramatically following an outstanding campaign, with Nottingham Forest reportedly demanding in excess of £120 million.

Interest from Manchester City has further intensified competition for the 23-year-old, making any deal increasingly difficult to complete.

Manchester United explore alternative targets

The developments have prompted United to explore alternative options, with strengthening other areas of the squad now viewed as a more realistic objective.

Left-back is understood to be one of the positions under consideration, and Newcastle defender Lewis Hall is believed to fit the profile of player the club could target.

There is a growing expectation that United are unlikely to pursue both Hall and a high-cost midfield signing during the same transfer window, particularly given the significant financial commitments required.

Tonali continues to impress at Newcastle

Tonali’s price tag reflects his importance to Newcastle.

The Italian enjoyed another influential season at St James’ Park, featuring in 56 matches across all competitions and accumulating more than 4,200 minutes of football.

In the Premier League, he made 35 appearances and completed 1,375 passes at an accuracy rate of 87 per cent.

He also created 24 chances, provided two assists, and maintained his reputation as one of the division’s most consistent midfield operators.

Tonali’s impact for club and country

His influence extended into Europe, where he started all 11 of Newcastle’s Champions League matches.

Across all competitions, Tonali finished the season with three goals and seven assists while continuing to serve as the heartbeat of Eddie Howe’s midfield.

The 26-year-old also played a crucial role for Italy during their successful World Cup qualification campaign.

He featured in 15 qualification matches, contributing five goals and four assists as the Azzurri secured their place at the 2026 World Cup.

Elliot Anderson’s rise continues

Anderson, meanwhile, has emerged as one of English football’s fastest-rising talents.

The Nottingham Forest midfielder appeared in every Premier League match last season, recording four goals and four assists while establishing himself as one of the competition’s most complete box-to-box players.

Anderson led the Premier League for total touches, won more duels than any other player in the division, and finished among the league’s most effective midfielders for ball recoveries and progressive passing.
