Ljubo Puljic

Atalanta have wrapped up a smart bit of business. The club signs Croatian centre-back Ljubo Puljic from Bayern Munich’s reserve side on a four-year deal. He arrived in Bergamo today, alongside his representatives from Bola Group. Done and sealed.

A Rising Star Heads to Bergamo

Puljic’s journey has been quick but impressive. Born in Vinkovci, he came through Croatian club NK Osijek. Bayern then snapped him up in 2023 for a fee around €2.8 million. Since then, he’s developed steadily within Bayern’s setup, racking up 66 appearances across the youth and reserve teams. Yet a senior debut never quite arrived.

Standing at 1.94 meters, Puljic offers serious physical presence. At just 19, he already captains Croatia’s U19 side, with 14 caps and two goals to his name. That kind of leadership at youth level often signals something special.

Competition for his signature was fierce, too. Both AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund tracked him closely. Atalanta, however, moved decisively. Working under Maurizio Sarri, the Bergamo club has built a strong reputation for developing promising defenders. Recent history backs that up.

Initially, Puljic joins Atalanta’s Under 23 side, gaining minutes and adjusting to Italian football. The plan, though, doesn’t stop there. He’s expected to link up with the first team for their summer retreat in July. There, he’ll train alongside senior players and feature in pre-season friendlies.

This approach mirrors last summer’s blueprint. Atalanta signed young defender Ahanor from Genoa using a similar pathway. He went on to debut for Italy’s national team. If Puljic follows a comparable trajectory, Bergamo could have unearthed another gem.

For Bayern, meanwhile, this represents another academy product moving on without a senior appearance. Still, given the fee invested back in 2023, letting Puljic go now hardly counts as a loss. Sometimes, paths simply diverge.
