Nicolò Zaniolo

Udinese have triggered their buy clause for Nicolò Zaniolo, turning his loan spell into a permanent transfer. Galatasaray receives €5 million for the Italian forward while retaining a 50 percent sell-on clause on any future sale.

From Wandering Loanee to Key Man in Friuli

Zaniolo’s career, until recently, read like a story of unfulfilled potential. He broke through at Roma, then moved to Galatasaray in 2023 for around €15 million. Since then, though, things rarely went smoothly.

Loan spells followed at Aston Villa, Atalanta, and Fiorentina, but none of them stuck. Each time, the buy-out conditions went unmet, and Zaniolo returned to Turkey without a permanent home. By last summer, his market value had dropped considerably.

Udinese, however, saw an opportunity. They negotiated a paid loan deal, complete with two possible buy options at season’s end. One required a full €10 million payment. The other, a cheaper €5 million route, left Galatasaray holding half of any future sale.

This time, finally, things clicked. Zaniolo settled quickly in Friuli, contributing directly to results that mattered. His performance during a 3-0 win over Milan stood out as a particular highlight. Sporting director Gianluca Nani publicly praised both his output and his attitude off the pitch.

Behind the scenes, though, wages remained the sticking point. Zaniolo earned over €3 million per year in Turkey, well above Udinese’s usual ceiling. Eventually, negotiations found middle ground, reportedly around €1.7 million annually across a multi-year deal. That compromise, ultimately, made permanence possible.

For a player who spent years searching for stability, this represents real validation. Udinese, meanwhile, gains a forward capable of unlocking games, exactly what their attack lacked following recent departures.

A Calculated Gamble That Paid Off

From a financial standpoint, both clubs walk away satisfied. Galatasaray recover a meaningful fee from a player many considered a lost cause. Add the sell-on clause, and any future move could bring further reward down the line.

Udinese, for their part, secured their man without overextending. Choosing the €5 million route, rather than the full €10 million, reflects smart business. Combined with the lower wage agreement, the club gains a proven Serie A performer at a manageable cost.

Looking forward, Zaniolo now becomes central to Udinese’s plans. Alongside forward Keinan Davis, he’s expected to anchor the attack heading into next season. After years of false starts elsewhere, Friuli might finally be the place where things stick for good.
