The End of the Martinez Era
Roberto Martinez is leaving. Confirmed. Done.
The Spanish coach will step down as Portugal manager when his contract expires at the end of July, regardless of how far the Seleção go at this World Cup. Three years. A Nations League title. A quarter-final at Euro 2024. Now, an exit.
Martinez feels this chapter has run its course. His dream, reportedly, is a return to the Premier League. He built his name in England with Wigan and Everton before crossing into international management. That pull clearly remains strong.
Portugal faces DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia in Group K. Whatever happens, Martinez coaches knowing his future lies elsewhere. Not ideal preparation for a tournament run. Yet the FPF moved quickly to calm the noise. Their statement was brief and pointed: both parties remain fully focused on the World Cup. Professional to the end.
The Mourinho Twist That Changes Everything
Here is where it gets complicated. Jose Mourinho had a verbal agreement with the Portuguese FA to take over after this tournament. The Special One. Coming home. Managing his nation. It was close to happening.
Then Real Madrid called. Mourinho signed a two-year deal at the Bernabeu. Portugal was left without their chosen successor overnight.
Jorge Jesus now emerges as the frontrunner to fill the void. But the vacancy stings. Mourinho would have been a seismic appointment. Instead, Portugal must rebuild without their most iconic manager candidate and, very likely, without Cristiano Ronaldo, who is widely expected to retire internationally after this tournament.
A new era begins. Ready or not.
