De Zerbi Raids Former Club in Defensive Overhaul

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a £52m deal to sign Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton. Clean. No add-ons. Done.

The 26-year-old Netherlands international becomes Spurs’ third summer signing, following Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson through the door. Roberto De Zerbi pushed hard for this one. He knows Van Hecke well, having worked with him during his time at Brighton. Their relationship clearly runs deep. Van Hecke reportedly only wanted Tottenham. A father-figure reunion. A statement of trust.

Brighton originally bought Van Hecke for just £1.8m from NAC Breda back in 2020. They have negotiated a 20% sell-on clause in the deal. Smart business from the Seagulls, even as they lose one of their finest defenders.

At Spurs, Van Hecke links up with Netherlands teammate Micky van de Ven. Two Dutch internationals. Both comfortable on the ball. Both exactly the type De Zerbi demands in his system. The Lewis family promised to back their manager after a harrowing season that nearly ended in relegation. This signing proves they meant it.

Vuskovic Stand-Off Keeps Tensions Simmering

However, not everything between these two clubs is straightforward.

Brighton want Luka Vuskovic as Van Hecke’s replacement. Tottenham want to keep him. Brighton have now submitted a second offer, worth £35m. Spurs rejected it outright.

The two deals are completely separate in structure and negotiation. Brighton are pushing. Spurs are holding firm. Vuskovic stays for now.
