Gakpo

Netherlands announced themselves as genuine contenders with a ruthless 5-1 win over Sweden, moving top of Group F in the process. Cody Gakpo and Brian Brobbey both scored twice, while Crysencio Summerville added a third World Cup goal contribution off the bench.

Brobbey’s Bold Start Sets the Tone

Ronald Koeman sprang a surprise by starting Brobbey ahead of Summerville, and the gamble paid off instantly. The Sunderland striker opened the scoring inside five minutes, poking home a low cross from Gakpo. Twelve minutes later, he doubled his tally in near identical fashion, sliding in to finish a Denzel Dumfries delivery. Two goals in seventeen minutes silenced any doubts about Koeman’s selection call.

Gakpo then took center stage himself. After Sweden had a goal chalked off for offside late in the first half, the Liverpool forward struck twice within ten minutes of the restart. His first came from a tight angle on the left, his second a simple tap-in at the back post. That brace pushed him to five World Cup group-stage goals, level with Robin van Persie as the Netherlands’ most prolific scorer at this stage of the competition, and earned him the match’s Man of the Match award.

Sweden pulled one back through Anthony Elanga, who finished smartly after a defensive lapse from Virgil van Dijk. It barely mattered, though. Summerville, introduced at halftime for Donyell Malen, swept home from the edge of the box in the 90th minute, his second World Cup goal in as many games and a timely reminder of his quality with his market value rising fast this summer.

Confidence Building for Koeman’s Side

Held to a draw by Japan in their opener, this performance felt like a statement. Koeman called it a potential turning point, hoping the freedom shown here carries forward. With four points and a goal difference now firmly in their favor, Netherlands look increasingly like a side capable of going deep this tournament.
