Martin Demichelis Confirmed as RB Leipzig Head Coach

A Bold Bet on the Argentine

RB Leipzig have moved fast and moved boldly. The Bundesliga club confirmed today the appointment of Martín Demichelis as their new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season, handing the 45-year-old Argentine his first senior coaching role in German football.

Demichelis signs a contract running until June 30, 2028. Leipzig triggered a 2.5 million euro release clause to prise him away from RCD Mallorca, a club he had only joined in February 2026. The move is unconventional. It is also deliberate.

Marcel Schäfer, managing director of sport, made Leipzig’s thinking clear. “With Martín Demichelis, we are gaining a head coach who has gained experience as a player and coach in Europe, South America, and North America, working at the highest level. This international perspective is an excellent fit for RB Leipzig and its global focus. Martín combines a clear playing philosophy with high intensity and professional expertise.”

Demichelis himself spoke with conviction. “I was won over by my discussions with the club and its sporting vision. RB Leipzig are an ambitious club with a clear identity, outstanding talent and a determination to keep improving at the highest level. That is exactly the kind of challenge I was looking for.”

Replacing a Man Who Did His Job

The timing raised eyebrows. Ole Werner was sacked despite steering Leipzig back into the Champions League after taking over from Werder Bremen last summer. That is the standard Leipzig hold themselves to. Qualifying for Europe is not enough. The hierarchy wanted a shift in tactical identity and a different kind of ambition.

Jurgen Klopp, who now oversees footballing operations across the Red Bull network, played a key role in shaping this decision. His influence points Leipzig toward a more defined, high-intensity playing style for the seasons ahead.

Demichelis carries the right biography for the job. As a player, he won four Bundesliga titles and four DFB-Pokal trophies with Bayern Munich, earning deep familiarity with German football’s culture and demands. His coaching path took him through Málaga as an assistant, Bayern Munich’s youth academy, River Plate, and Monterrey before his brief but impressive stint at Mallorca.

Leipzig had actually approached Demichelis during the 2024/25 winter window when he was at Monterrey. He turned them down then. Klopp’s backing and Leipzig’s Champions League platform proved more persuasive this time around.
