The deal makes complete sense in context. Inter sold Denzel Dumfries to Real Madrid and now seek a viable replacement for the impressive Dutchman. Palestra emerged as the top target early. The chase has been long, competitive, and expensive.
Inter opened with an offer of 40 million euros. Atalanta held out for 50 million. The gap has now closed. Inter committed their major summer spending allocation to this one signing. That tells its own story about how important Palestra is to their rebuild.
A Prospect Who Proved His Worth
Palestra did not arrive at this valuation by accident. The 21-year-old made 37 league appearances for Cagliari during a season-long loan spell, scoring once and adding four assists across the campaign. Understated numbers, perhaps. The context tells a richer story.
While Palestra is counted as a right-back, he played as a right wing-back in 31 of those 37 games. That positional flexibility made him one of Serie A’s most dynamic wide defenders. His athleticism, pressing intensity, and ability to overlap at pace drew comparisons with the player he would replace at San Siro.
Arsenal and Juventus had also registered interest, while Premier League clubs were well positioned financially to match Atalanta’s valuation. Inter moved decisively to prevent that from happening. Palestra’s eagerness to remain in Italy gave the Nerazzurri a crucial edge over English and Spanish rivals.
Atalanta previously rejected an attempt to include Davide Frattesi as a makeweight. They wanted clean, hard cash. Inter have delivered exactly that. The announcement may follow shortly after final contractual details are wrapped up.
