Chelsea Hijack Inter to Land Palestra in €55m Deal

The Blues Pull Off a Stunning Coup

Chelsea have done it. In one of the most dramatic transfer hijacks of the summer window, the Blues have reached agreement with Atalanta to sign Marco Palestra, blowing Inter Milan out of the water with a package worth 55 million euros plus bonuses.

The deal is close to completion. Chelsea struck agreement with Atalanta overnight, and the player side is now being finalised. Palestra has given an initial green light. Xabi Alonso identified the 21-year-old as a top priority and pushed the club to move decisively. They did exactly that.

Inter thought they had this one. They spent weeks building toward an agreement, meeting Palestra’s agent Alessandro Lucci for lengthy talks and presenting personal terms worth 2.5 million euros per season. A deal at 45 million plus five million in bonuses was all but settled. Then Chelsea moved. Their salary offer was more than double Inter’s, reportedly reaching between five and six million euros per season. The financial gap was simply impossible to close.

Alonso considers Palestra essential for his new Chelsea project. The wing-back fits his high-intensity, possession-based system perfectly. His athleticism, pressing ability, and comfort driving forward from deep make him exactly the kind of modern defender the Chelsea head coach wants to build around.

A Star Made in Bergamo and Cagliari

Palestra’s rise has been rapid and convincing. Developed through Atalanta’s academy, he spent last season on loan at Cagliari, where he made 37 Serie A appearances and won the league’s Best Defender award for the 2025/26 campaign. His market value stood at just 3.5 million euros when the loan began. It exploded to 35 million by the end of the campaign. Chelsea are now paying 55 million plus bonuses.

For Atalanta, this represents an extraordinary return on a product they developed entirely within their own system. For Inter, it is a painful and public defeat after weeks of progress and confidence.

Palestra can operate at right wing-back and right-back, and has also featured in central midfield. That versatility matters enormously in Alonso’s system. Chelsea now add a Serie A Defender of the Year and a full Italy international to their squad. The paperwork is being completed. The announcement will follow soon.
