Swiss Machine Keeps Rolling
Switzerland did not come to North America to make up the numbers. Murat Yakin’s side closed out Group B in style, beating Canada 2-1 at BMO Field in Toronto to finish as group winners with seven points from three unbeaten matches. Clinical, composed, and utterly consistent throughout.
Ruben Vargas opened the scoring in the 46th minute, assisted by Johan Manzambi, before Manzambi added a second in the 57th minute after being set up by Breel Embolo. Switzerland made it look straightforward. Granit Xhaka and Manzambi controlled the midfield completely, distributing play wide to Vargas and Embolo, who caused Canada problems throughout with their pace and directness.
The result confirmed Switzerland as one of the tournament’s most balanced sides. They have scored freely, defended with discipline, and navigated a tough group without losing a game. Manuel Akanji and Nico Elvedi held firm at the back, limiting opposing attacks while Yakin’s system continued to function exactly as designed.
Next up for Switzerland is a round-of-32 tie at BC Place in Vancouver on July 3 against one of the best third-placed teams from Group G, likely Iran or Belgium. A fourth consecutive last-16 appearance is firmly within reach.
Canada Survive the Storm
Canada’s tournament has not been straightforward. But they are through. That is what matters.
Despite losing 2-1 to Switzerland, Jesse Marsch’s side advanced to the round of 32 as group runners-up, with a superior goal difference over Bosnia allowing them to hold onto second place in the final standings. Bosnia’s 3-1 win over Qatar was not enough to displace them.
Canada’s campaign produced moments of genuine quality alongside moments of frustration. Their 6-0 demolition of Qatar in matchday two was the tournament’s most emphatic result by any team. They drew with Bosnia in game one. That draw marked the first time Canada had ever won a point at a World Cup, having lost all three games in both 1986 and 2022. Progress. Real, tangible progress.
Alphonso Davies was lively again against Switzerland. His directness and pace repeatedly stretched the Swiss backline. Jonathan David led the line with energy. The pieces are in place for Canada to cause a genuine upset in the knockout rounds on home soil, in front of a crowd that will be completely behind them.
The full Group B picture: Switzerland top on seven points. Canada second on four. Bosnia third on four, advancing as one of the best third-placed sides. Qatar exit without a win.
