All In on the Bernabeu Dream
Marc Cucurella is settling into life as a Real Madrid player. And he already wants his Chelsea teammate to join him. Speaking openly ahead of Spain’s World Cup campaign, the 27-year-old left-back revealed that Enzo Fernandez has already congratulated him on completing his move to the Bernabeu, and made clear he would love to share a dressing room with the Argentine midfielder next season.
“Enzo Fernandez has congratulated me for joining Real Madrid,” Cucurella told Radio Marca. “I hope he joins Real Madrid too. I’d be so happy. The opportunity for us to both join Real Madrid in the same summer would be amazing.”
Real Madrid and Chelsea reached an agreement for Cucurella on a deal running until June 30, 2032, making him the club’s first confirmed signing of the summer. The deal is worth an initial 55 million euros with a further five million in add-ons. Jose Mourinho pushed hard to make the move happen, identifying Cucurella as his top priority at left-back from the moment he took charge at the Bernabeu.
Chelsea would not entertain selling Fernandez for anything below 120 million pounds. He arrived at Stamford Bridge from Benfica in 2023 for a British record fee of 106.8 million pounds. That number will test Real Madrid’s resolve. But Cucurella’s public endorsement adds an unusual and compelling dimension to the story.
No Problems Covering for Vinicius
Cucurella also addressed the question every Madrid fan will have about his relationship with Vinicius Jr on the left flank. His answer was as direct and refreshing as they come.
“I do not care if he doesn’t track back or doesn’t help defensively,” Cucurella said. “Let him stay fresh all game so he can score goals. I will do all the dirty work for him.”
That is the kind of attitude Mourinho demands from his full-backs. Cucurella has spent years at Chelsea operating as a tireless, aggressive left-back who sacrifices himself for the shape of the team. Pairing him with the most dangerous left-sided attacker in world football makes complete tactical sense.
Cucurella made 163 appearances for Chelsea, winning the Conference League and Club World Cup before growing frustrated at the club’s direction following the departure of Enzo Maresca. Real Madrid represent everything he has worked towards. A return to Spain, the biggest club in the world, and now the chance to bring his best friend along for the ride.
Chelsea’s relationship with Real Madrid is strong, but the Blues will not allow Fernandez to leave for a penny under their asking price. The ball is in Madrid’s court.
