The Homecoming Is Real
Alejandro Grimaldo is heading home. The Spanish left-back completes his move from Bayer Leverkusen to Atlético Madrid today, with all parties signing off on a fee of around €20 million. The contract runs through June 2030. Done. Confirmed.
This one has been building for weeks. Grimaldo made his ambitions clear long ago. “I’ve always said it: I want to return to LaLiga,” he told reporters last year. Atlético listened. Diego Simeone moved. Personal terms were sorted early, and that momentum carried the deal to the finish line.
Leverkusen held out for more initially, valuing the 30-year-old closer to €25-30 million. Understandably so. Grimaldo delivered 13 goals and 11 assists across 43 appearances last season. Elite numbers for a full-back. However, with only one year left on his contract, Leverkusen had little choice but to negotiate. Atletico stayed firm, and eventually the clubs found common ground.
Simeone Lands a Gem
Simeone needed a left-back. Badly. The position has been a revolving door at the Metropolitano for years. Now he gets one of the best in Europe. Grimaldo brings pace, delivery, and set-piece quality that Atlético have sorely lacked. He is no passenger either. In three Bundesliga seasons, he registered 47 goal contributions in league play alone.
Currently on World Cup duty with Spain, Grimaldo will link up with Atlético after the tournament concludes. The timing works perfectly. Simeone gets his man fresh and motivated. For more on Atlético Madrid’s summer business, check out KCPredict.
