Greenwood Nets United a Second Payday at Fenerbahce

Four-Year Deal Confirmed in Istanbul

Fenerbahce have officially confirmed Mason Greenwood’s arrival from Marseille on a four-year contract. The transfer fee totals €39 million, structured as three equal installments spread across three years. Additionally, Fenerbahce will cover the mandatory FIFA solidarity contribution as part of the arrangement.

For Manchester United, this deal delivers an unexpected windfall. Thanks to a sell-on clause retained when Greenwood departed for Marseille in 2024, United will collect €15.6 million from the full fee. However, that figure isn’t the final number reaching Old Trafford. Getafe, where Greenwood spent a loan spell previously, are entitled to €3.12 million themselves, leaving United with a net €12.48 million.

Greenwood arrives having enjoyed a prolific two-year spell in Ligue 1, scoring prolifically and providing plenty of assists along the way. That form attracted serious interest from multiple clubs, including Atletico Madrid and Saudi Arabian suitors, yet Greenwood ultimately chose Turkey instead. Personal preference, rather than the highest bid, decided his next destination.

United’s Windfall Fuels Midfield Rebuild

Timing here couldn’t suit United better. Having already completed deals for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this summer, the Old Trafford hierarchy continues chasing a marquee defensive midfielder to replace Casemiro. Every additional euro matters given how aggressively INEOS wants to reshape Michael Carrick’s squad.

Notably, United previously held a buy-back option on Greenwood but chose not to activate it, clearing the final hurdle for this transfer to proceed. That decision, while perhaps debated by fans given his scoring record abroad, allowed the deal with Fenerbahce to move forward smoothly.

For Fenerbahce, Greenwood joins a squad already strengthened by Nathan Ake and Vedat Muriqi, signaling serious ambition domestically and in Europe this coming season.
