Elland Road Emerges As Favourite

Leeds United are now deep in talks with Manchester City over signing goalkeeper James Trafford, and momentum clearly favours a move to Elland Road. Newcastle United have also shown genuine interest, making club-to-club contact recently. Despite that competition, the 23-year-old England international appears to be leaning firmly toward Leeds.

Understandably, Leeds are now working hard to get this over the line. Their goalkeeping situation has looked increasingly urgent all summer. Illan Meslier departed for Arsenal on a free transfer, while Karl Darlow rejected fresh terms before joining Manchester United instead. That leaves Lucas Perri and backup Alex Cairns as the only senior options currently at Daniel Farke’s disposal.

Trafford’s situation at City, meanwhile, has become equally clear cut. Signed from Burnley for £27m last summer, he arrived expecting genuine competition for the number one shirt. Instead, Gianluigi Donnarumma quickly established himself as City’s undisputed first choice, restricting Trafford largely to domestic cup appearances throughout the campaign.

Now, with regular football his priority, a move away looks inevitable. City remain willing to sell for the right price, with figures around £40m circulating regularly across recent reporting. Given Trafford’s age and England pedigree, that fee looks entirely reasonable for a goalkeeper still developing at the top level.

Competition Remains Genuine, For Now

Newcastle’s interest shouldn’t be dismissed lightly, either. Their approach suggests genuine intent, not simply background monitoring. Aston Villa have also circled the situation in recent weeks, adding further competition to an increasingly crowded race for Trafford’s signature.

Still, Leeds appear to hold a clear advantage in terms of the player’s own preference. Sources close to the deal suggest Trafford values the guaranteed starting role Leeds can offer immediately, something neither Newcastle nor Villa could promise with total certainty right now.

Financial details remain the main sticking point going forward. Trafford’s wage demands could complicate negotiations, even if City’s asking price gets met comfortably. Leeds, though, seem determined to push this deal through before preseason preparations intensify further.
