Chelsea Finalise Terms With Como
Trevoh Chalobah’s departure from Chelsea has finally taken shape. Como have agreed a deal worth up to €36 million for the England international, structured as a €30 million guaranteed fee plus €6 million in add-ons. Personal terms were never really in question. Chalobah made his preference clear weeks ago, and now the two clubs have closed the financial gap that stalled talks throughout July.
Crucially, Chelsea have also secured a sell-on clause. That detail matters. It gives the west London club a stake in Chalobah’s future value, should Como eventually cash in on the 27-year-old down the line. For a side navigating tight profit and sustainability rules, that clause adds a layer of long-term protection to an already useful sale.
Chalobah’s exit fits a broader pattern at Stamford Bridge this summer. Xabi Alonso has settled on his preferred centre-back options, Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, and new arrival Maxence Lacroix among them. With that group in place, opportunities for Chalobah simply dried up. He barely featured in Chelsea’s pre-season plans and wasn’t part of Alonso’s touring squad, a clear signal that his future lay elsewhere.
Financially, the deal represents a smart piece of business. Chelsea originally valued Chalobah at a straight €30 million, only for Como to first offer less. Negotiations stretched on through the summer before Cesc Fabregas’ side blinked and matched the asking price, adding bonuses to sweeten the structure further. Given Chalobah’s limited midweek availability at Chelsea next season, letting him leave for close to his valuation looks like sound planning rather than a forced sale.
Fabregas Lands a Familiar Face
For Como, this signing carries real symbolic weight. Fabregas knows Chalobah from his own Chelsea days, having trained alongside him when the defender broke through the academy ranks. That connection appears to have played a role in convincing Chalobah that Lombardy, not another Premier League move, made sense for this stage of his career.
Still, nothing is guaranteed once he arrives. Jacobo Ramon and Marc Oliver Kempf started every big game last season and helped Como concede fewer goals than any other side in Serie A. Breaking that partnership won’t happen automatically. Even so, Chalobah brings Premier League know-how and tactical versatility that should strengthen Fabregas’ options across the back line immediately.
