Amazon Founder Eyes Historic Investment
Jeff Bezos looks set to become the newest major name in Premier League ownership. A consortium featuring the Amazon founder is closing in on a deal to acquire roughly a third of Liverpool, following extensive links with several NFL and NBA franchises that never materialised.
The proposed investment reportedly values Liverpool at close to $6 billion, one of the largest valuations in football club history. That figure suggests the consortium, which also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, would invest around $2 billion to secure their stake. Fenway Sports Group, the club’s American owners since 2010, has long expressed openness toward new shareholders.
Notably, Bezos has explored professional sports ownership before, without ever completing a deal. He reportedly considered bids for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders, ultimately deciding against pursuing either franchise. Liverpool, then, would mark his first major foray into elite sports ownership, and arguably his most ambitious yet.
Context makes this potential valuation even more striking. FSG originally purchased Liverpool from Tom Hicks and George Gillett back in 2010 for approximately $480 million. Sixteen years later, that initial investment has multiplied more than tenfold, reflecting the club’s transformation both on the pitch and commercially.
Timing adds intrigue, too. Liverpool enter a genuine period of transition following Arne Slot’s departure and Mohamed Salah’s exit, meaning fresh investment could arrive precisely when reshaping the squad demands it.
Comparisons Highlight Scale Of Deal
If completed, this transaction would rank among football’s richest-ever ownership deals. Only Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s $5.4 billion Chelsea takeover in 2022 currently sits higher, though a significant portion of that figure covered infrastructure commitments rather than the club purchase itself.
FSG’s approach to outside investment isn’t new, either. The group previously welcomed LeBron James and RedBird Capital into its ownership structure, gradually diversifying its shareholder base over the years.
Neither Liverpool nor FSG has officially commented on the reports. Still, momentum behind the Bezos consortium continues building steadily, according to Al Jazeera, suggesting an announcement could follow soon.
