Deal Struck After Weeks Of Negotiation
Barcelona have finally reached agreement with Manchester City to sign Rodri, closing a saga that dragged through much of the summer. The package is worth up to €76.5 million, roughly £65.3 million, following two previously rejected bids and weeks of intense back-and-forth between both clubs.
The breakdown reveals a structure built for compromise. Barcelona will pay €60 million upfront, with a further €16.5 million available through performance-related add-ons. City reportedly expect to recoup at least €71.5 million in practice, given that more than €11 million of those bonuses are considered genuinely achievable rather than speculative.
Notably, this breakthrough arrived only after City rejected two earlier proposals. An opening bid of around €45 million was dismissed almost immediately, followed by a second offer near €60 million that still fell short of City’s demands. Barcelona’s improved third bid finally matched City’s stated minimum, unlocking the final stages of negotiation between sporting directors Deco and Hugo Viana.
Personal terms were never really the sticking point throughout this process. Rodri had already agreed a four-year contract with Barcelona weeks earlier, having made clear his preference for Camp Nou over a rival approach from Real Madrid. Entering the final year of his City deal, he showed little inclination toward extending his stay in Manchester.
A Golden Ball Winner Heads To Catalonia
Rodri arrives at Barcelona fresh off an extraordinary summer with Spain. He captained his country to World Cup glory and was named the tournament’s Golden Ball winner, cementing his reputation as one of world football’s most complete midfielders.
His departure closes a hugely successful seven-year spell at City. Since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2019, Rodri made 298 appearances, scoring 28 goals and providing 32 assists, while collecting four Premier League titles and the Champions League along the way. He famously scored the winner against Inter Milan in the 2023 final.
For City, this sale continues a broader midfield reshuffle under Enzo Maresca, following the £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. Barcelona now hope to complete the paperwork quickly enough for Rodri to be introduced at Wednesday’s Joan Gamper Trophy match against Al Ahly, according to ESPN.
