Heatwave Damage Forces Emergency Switch
Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 title defence begins with an unexpected twist. The Ligue de Football Professionnel has moved the club’s opening fixture against Rennes away from the Parc des Princes, after inspectors deemed the pitch unplayable due to fungal damage and severe deterioration.
Notably, the LFP confirmed it was informed of the issue on Monday, ordering expert inspections just two days later on Wednesday morning. That assessment concluded the surface simply couldn’t guarantee player safety, leaving officials little choice but to invert the fixture entirely. Sunday’s match will now go ahead at Rennes’ Roazhon Park instead, with kickoff still scheduled for 8:45pm local time.
PSG explained the damage stemmed from a genuinely brutal summer. “The latest heatwave, following a series of successive and exceptional heatwaves that have affected the Paris region this summer, has significantly accelerated the deterioration of the pitch,” the club said in a statement, adding that a full replacement is already planned before their September 4 fixture against Monaco.
Interestingly, the timing carries broader significance. According to analysis via Le Monde, France’s third heatwave of the summer began in late July and has been linked to an estimated 7,300 excess deaths nationwide, underlining just how extreme conditions have been across the country this season.
Wider Disruption Hits French Football
This isn’t an isolated incident, either. Spanish club Celta Vigo were similarly forced to postpone their La Liga opener against Osasuna earlier this month, after a fungal disease damaged their pitch during a prolonged spell of temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius.
For PSG, this disruption arrives amid an already demanding early-season schedule. The club has already played two matches away from home this campaign, defeating Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup before a shock defeat to RC Lens in the French Super Cup. Notably, left-back Nuno Mendes will also miss the Rennes fixture, serving the first match of a three-game suspension following his red card against Lens.
Whether the return fixture in March also shifts venues remains genuinely uncertain. Under LFP regulations, according to OneFootball, Rennes could theoretically host PSG twice this season, since the inversion doesn’t automatically flip the reverse fixture too.
