Leipzig Favourites As Nkunku Weighs Return

Frenchman Assesses Options Before Decision

RB Leipzig remain favourites to sign Christopher Nkunku, with the striker leaning toward a return to Germany after weighing multiple proposals from across Europe. Negotiations continue with AC Milan over the precise conditions of a loan deal, though Leipzig appear to be making genuine progress toward closing this reunion.

Notably, Nkunku’s situation at Milan deteriorated quickly following Ruben Amorim’s arrival. The Frenchman was excluded from the squad entirely, training separately alongside fellow outcasts Fikayo Tomori, Youssouf Fofana and David Odogu, before eventually having his No.18 shirt stripped away altogether. That treatment left little doubt regarding his standing within Amorim’s plans.

Interestingly, competition for his signature has been considerable. Newcastle United emerged as strong suitors, reportedly offering the most attractive loan terms among Milan’s suitors, while Aston Villa, Borussia Dortmund and Roma all registered interest at various points. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Nkunku has grown increasingly convinced that Germany suits him better than a return to the Premier League.

Familiar Surroundings Sway Decision

That preference stems partly from direct contact with Leipzig’s coaching staff. Nkunku reportedly spoke with manager Ole Werner personally, strengthening his conviction that a reunion offers the clearest route back to consistent, high-level football. Between 2019 and 2023, he scored 70 goals and provided 56 assists across 172 appearances, winning the German Cup twice and finishing as Bundesliga top scorer in 2023.

Financially, this move carries genuine appeal for Leipzig too. Milan want around €35 million to sell permanently, though a loan with an option to buy currently looks the more likely structure given Nkunku’s considerable wages. That figure represents a fraction of the €60 million fee Leipzig originally received from Chelsea back in 2023.

Leipzig’s need has grown urgent following Yan Diomande’s departure to Real Madrid, leaving Martin Demichelis with only Conrad Harder and Romulo as recognised strikers. With talks progressing steadily, according to SempreMilan, an agreement could materialise before the transfer window closes.
