Verbal Agreement Reached for Season-Long Loan
Lois Openda is heading to Olympique Lyon, with a verbal agreement now in place on a loan deal from Juventus. Lyon will cover the striker’s salary while paying a loan fee of around €3 million, with no obligation to buy attached. His medical is expected next week.
Openda gave the green light days ago, easing the path toward a formal announcement. His arrival addresses a gap left by Endrick’s return to Real Madrid following last season’s loan spell, giving Lyon a proven finisher up front.
His first season in Turin never matched expectations. Signed from RB Leipzig for nearly €43 million, Openda managed just a couple of goals across the campaign, falling well down Luciano Spalletti’s striking pecking order. That struggle made an exit almost inevitable this summer.
Juventus, meanwhile, faced a tricky situation of their own. An earlier obligation to buy Openda from Leipzig had already kicked in, leaving the Bianconeri stuck with a player who clearly needed a fresh start elsewhere. A loan without a buy clause suited both parties given the circumstances.
Lens and Leipzig Form Sparked Interest
Before his Serie A struggles, Openda built a genuinely impressive résumé across Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga. He scored 21 goals in 42 appearances for Lens during the 2022-23 season, then exploded further at Leipzig with 41 goals in 93 matches across all competitions.
That pedigree explains Lyon’s persistence throughout negotiations. Manager Paulo Fonseca reportedly views Openda as central to Champions League qualification hopes, assuming Lyon navigate the playoff round successfully. Time remains tight, though, with the July 30 registration deadline for those qualifiers fast approaching.
Belgium’s 26-year-old forward now gets a chance to rebuild his reputation in French football, a league where he already thrived once before. Whether Lyon later trigger a permanent option remains to be seen.
