Kylian Mbappe does not hand out praise carelessly. So when France’s captain speaks about Michael Olise with genuine warmth and admiration, it means something.
“It is so easy to play with Michael Olise,” Mbappe said. “He makes it easier, playing with his head up. He can always see my movements. I love playing with Michael.” High praise. Earned praise. And delivered with the kind of conviction that explains exactly why France look so fluid going forward at the 2026 World Cup.
The evidence is already there on the pitch. In France’s opening group game against Senegal, a 3-1 victory, Mbappe scored twice. Olise assisted both. The connection between them looked natural, automatic, and almost telepathic. Olise reads the run. Mbappe makes the run. The goal follows.
Olise himself responded with characteristic humility. “It is an enormous compliment, especially from Kylian,” the Bayern Munich winger said. The 24-year-old is coming off a Bundesliga Player of the Season award and a domestic double with Bayern, arriving in North America in the form of his life.

Mbappe also opened up about his club season and what it means to now be thriving on the international stage. “I tried to have the best season possible at Real Madrid,” he said. “The injury in January did not help me, but then I returned in the best shape.”
The Real Madrid forward finished as the Champions League’s top scorer with 15 goals despite missing a significant portion of the campaign. The World Cup now offers him a stage to settle all arguments. He already has three goals in two group games, and France have qualified for the round of 32 with a game to spare.
Mbappe was also quick to defend Ousmane Dembele, who faced criticism after France’s opener. “We all wanted Ousmane to score. We needed to unlock him. He is too important for us.” The support proved prophetic. Dembele scored against Iraq in game two, opening his World Cup account at a pivotal moment.
Mbappe reminded the media that Dembele is the reigning Ballon d’Or winner. That status does not disappear because of one quiet performance. France know exactly what they have in all three of their attacking stars. The rest of the tournament is about to find out.
