The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed its final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Ghana national team set for a challenging campaign in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

Ghana, who will open their tournament against Panama on 18 June 2026, head into the competition as one of Africa’s most experienced World Cup sides, returning to the global finals for their fifth appearance.

Ghana’s World Cup History and Group L Challenge

Their World Cup history remains defined by a landmark run to the quarter-finals in 2010, when they were eliminated by Uruguay on penalties.

Across all tournaments, Ghana have played 15 matches, winning 5, drawing 3, and losing 7, scoring 18 goals and conceding 23. Their all-time leading scorer at the finals remains Asamoah Gyan, who netted six goals to become Africa’s highest scorer in World Cup history.

Jordan Ayew Leads Ghana’s Squad With Experience

Captain Jordan Ayew will lead the squad into the tournament, continuing a family legacy deeply intertwined with Ghana’s World Cup story. The 34-year-old forward is expected to feature at his third World Cup, having previously played in 2014 and 2022.

At club level, Ayew is set to depart Leicester City as a free agent after the 2025–26 season. He registered 43 appearances, six goals, and three assists across all competitions in a campaign.

Internationally, Ayew is among Ghana’s most capped players with 119 appearances and 34 goals. He also played every group-stage match at both the 2014 and 2022 World Cups, providing one assist in Qatar against Portugal.

During qualification for 2026, he delivered a standout return of seven goals and seven assists in nine matches, establishing himself as Ghana’s most influential attacking figure in the campaign.

Semenyo and Partey Headline Ghana’s Key Players

Ghana’s squad also features in-form forward Antoine Semenyo, who has risen rapidly in European football following a £64m move to Manchester City in January 2026.

Semenyo ended the 2025–26 season with 19 goals and seven assists across 45 club appearances split between Manchester City and Bournemouth, while also contributing during World Cup qualification with one goal for the national team.

Midfield responsibility will fall heavily on Thomas Partey, who is expected to anchor the side’s structure and dictate tempo, supported by a blend of emerging and experienced players across the midfield unit.

Ghana Combine Experience With Emerging Talent

The 26-man squad comprises three goalkeepers, nine defenders, six midfielders, and eight forwards, reflecting a balanced approach that balances defensive stability and attacking depth.

Notably, Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare earns a place in the squad after strong domestic performances, emphasizing Ghana’s willingness to integrate home-based talent alongside Europe-based regulars such as Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Joseph Anang.

Defensively, Ghana combines experience and physicality, with players such as Baba Rahman, Gideon Mensah, and Alidu Seidu forming the core, while additional options include Abdul Mumin, Derrick Luckassen, and others who provide depth across the back line.

Black Stars Face Tough Road Ahead

Ghana faces a demanding path in Group L, opening against Panama before meetings with England and Croatia, two sides with deep tournament pedigree.
