Liverpool have the option to bring defender Jarell Quansah back to Anfield after inserting a buy-back clause when he joined Bayer Leverkusen last summer.
The Premier League club sold the academy graduate to the Bundesliga side in 2025 for an initial fee of £30m, with add-ons taking the deal to £35m. As part of the agreement, Liverpool negotiated a buy-back option worth around £55m, allowing them to regain control of the player’s future should they wish to do so.
Contract framework already in place
Reports indicate that the framework of a potential return has already been established. Key elements of Quansah’s contract, including salary structure, bonuses and contract length, were agreed during the original transfer negotiations, meaning Liverpool could move quickly if they decide to activate the clause.
Breakthrough season at Bayer Leverkusen
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Bayer Leverkusen, establishing himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable defenders.
Quansah made 44 appearances across all competitions during the 2025-26 season and contributed five goals, an impressive return for a central defender.
Defensive statistics and impact
His defensive performances have been equally eye-catching. The England international registered 117 clearances and maintained a passing accuracy of 92%.
The regular first-team football he sought by leaving Liverpool has accelerated his development, with Quansah becoming a key figure in Leverkusen’s defence.
International recognition
His performances in Germany have also been rewarded at an international level.
Quansah earned his senior England debut under manager Thomas Tuchel in November 2025 and subsequently secured a place in the Three Lions squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Liverpool future planning
Liverpool’s interest in a reunion is believed to be linked to Ibrahima Konate’s departure.
Quansah represents an attractive solution. As a homegrown player familiar with Liverpool’s system and expectations, he would require little time to adapt while offering proven Premier League experience and significant long-term potential.
