92 years in the making. Egypt finally have their first World Cup win, and Mohamed Salah delivered it in the most fitting way possible.

The Pharaohs beat New Zealand 3-1 at BC Place on Sunday, coming from behind to claim three points in Group G. A goal and an assist from Salah. A Man of the Match award to match. And a place in the history books for an entire nation.

Egypt had appeared at the 1934, 1990, and 2018 World Cups without a single victory to their name. That wait is over.

New Zealand made them work for it. Finn Surman powered in a headed opener from a 15th-minute corner, and the All Whites held that lead into half-time. Egypt looked flat. Disjointed. Short of ideas.

Salah Flips the Script

The second half was different. Egypt came out sharper, and the goals arrived in a ten-minute burst that changed everything.

Mostafa Zico headed home a precise Mohamed Hany cross in the 58th minute to level. Then Salah took over. Nine minutes later, he and Zico combined brilliantly in a slick one-two inside the box before Salah swept a left-footed finish into the bottom corner. Trademark. Clinical. Historic.

At 34, Salah became the oldest goalscorer for Egypt at a World Cup. He also became the oldest African player ever to score and assist in the same World Cup match. Substitute Trezeguet headed in a Salah corner in the 82nd minute to seal it.

Egypt now top Group G with four points. A place in the knockout rounds is nearly guaranteed. For Salah, the stage only gets bigger from here.
