Meslier Completes Surprise Arsenal Move

Illan Meslier has sealed his move to Arsenal. Medical checks concluded on Tuesday at the club’s Hertfordshire training centre, and the contract followed shortly after. The Frenchman arrives on a free transfer, having left Leeds United when his deal expired.

His exit from Elland Road closed a long chapter. Meslier spent seven seasons there, making 215 appearances and helping Leeds secure two Championship title-winning campaigns. Form dipped badly during 2024-25, though, eventually costing him his starting spot.

Third Choice, But Plenty of Purpose

Arsenal’s motivation here seems clear. Meslier joins as third-choice goalkeeper behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga, adding proven Premier League experience without any transfer fee attached. That depth matters, especially given lingering uncertainty around Kepa’s future in north London.

His arrival also benefits young goalkeeper Tommy Setford directly. The 20-year-old, highly rated since joining from Ajax, can now depart on loan to gain regular senior football. Blocked behind three experienced options otherwise, that pathway makes sense for his development.

Meslier brings genuine Premier League pedigree. Across 107 top-flight appearances, he kept 21 clean sheets, numbers that still carry weight despite his recent decline. Losing his place to Karl Darlow, then watching Lucas Perri arrive, clearly hurt his standing at Leeds.

Still, this move carries risk from Meslier’s perspective. Sitting behind Raya offers little first-team football, at least initially. Should Kepa depart, though, a genuine backup role could open quickly.
