Neuer Bows Out of International Football

The Last Dance Is Over

Manuel Neuer has played his final game for Germany. The 40-year-old legend confirmed before the tournament that this World Cup would be his last. Now, following the penalty exit to Paraguay, the curtain has come down for good.

Neuer was emphatic before the tournament: “For me it is clear that this is my last tournament. I do not plan to be there in two years time for the next Euro. In the last days I have dealt with the fact that these are the last games for Germany.”

No U-turn this time. No second comeback. Final.

The Bayern Munich icon had initially retired after Euro 2024 but reversed that decision after showing vintage form at club level, convincing Nagelsmann to bring him back for one last shot at glory. He wanted a second World Cup winners’ medal. It wasn’t to be.

A Legacy That Stands Forever

The numbers tell one story. The impact tells another. Neuer revolutionised the goalkeeper position with his ability to sweep behind a high defensive line and his distribution with his feet, earning 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues with Bayern.

He has not missed a single major tournament in 16 years and no one could wrestle the number one shirt away from him. Not even time.

His final Germany cap came after 124 previous appearances, the last official one before this tournament at Euro 2024 on home soil. Paraguay ended what he could not finish on his own terms. Still, no goalkeeper shaped modern football quite like Neuer.
